On 25 March 2017, the EU Member State have celebratedthe 60th Anniversary of  Rome Treaties, the international agreement that brought to the creation of theEuropean Economic Community that represented the starting point of theEuropean integration process. In the frame of Rome, the “eternal city”, the 27national leaders recalled the stages of an adventure undertaken by the sixpioneering countries when on 25 March 1957, the representatives of Belgium,West Germany, Italy, Netherland, France and Luxembourg signed the Treaties ofRome also known as the Treaties of the European Community (TEC): the EEC(European Economic Community) and the EAEC (the European Atomic EnergyCommunity, also known as Euratom).
"Today, wecelebrate the perseverance and the cleverness of EU’s founding fathers, whichhas its best proof in this crowded hall"- Italian primeminister Paolo Gentiloni  said in hisopening speech in the very place where the Treaty of Rome was signed 60 yearsago. Inhis speech, Gentiloni also recalled the several achievements of the Europeanintegration project, while acknowledging that EU has found itself unpreparedand responded late before major recent challenges such as migration, economiccrisis, and unemployment among others.
"We don’twant a divided Europe!" - Gentiloni said -"Europe is united and indivisible, but we want to move forward on a commonidea of Europe in areas such as defence, security. We need greater integrationand we claim a global role for Europe".
The event  marks the foundations of ourEurope. The celebration intends to remind to the citizens the main aim of the founding fathers: to bring peace and development in Europe after the second world war.
The declaration of Robert Shuman - "Europe will not be made all at once, or according to a single plan. It will be built through concrete achievements which first create a de facto solidarity” – represents this aim.
Manysteps further has been made by the EU Member States after the foundation of theEuropean Community: the fall of the Berlin Wall (1989),
the Treaty of Maastricht(1992) also better known as the Treaty of European Union, that nowadays formsthe basis of EU law, by setting out general principles of the EU’s purpose, theTreaty of Lisbon (2009) that intends to realize the concept of an integrated Europe. In particular, after this latest treaty,  the Member Stateshas spent many efforts to reach a minimum level of harmonization among the national states, especially in thearea of Freedom, Security and Justice.
During the celebration, inthe ancient “Horatii and Curiati” hall, the EU leadershave signed the “ Rome Declaration” emphasizing their commitments to renewEuropean Unity.
Itis worth to underline that Rome Declaration reaffirms the fundamental values ofEuropean unit, the need of the single market developmentsand four most important issues to be dealt: the security, the defense, theliberties, the welfare growth. It also highlights how it promotes theeconomic and social progress, as well as the cohesion and convergence ofnations belonging to the EU, respecting the diversity of national systems.
Forthe President of the European Commission, Jean Claude Junker, the documentrepresents a new beginning for the European project, but the priority is toturn these words in facts.
Europeis facing a period of international crisis and internal skepticism that imposeda moment of reflection in the face of internal and external challenges that isgoing to face.
For 60 years, the values on which this Union is built havenot changed: peace, freedom, tolerance, solidarity andthe rule of law bind and unite us. They must not be taken for granted and we mustfight for themevery day.” - thorugh this words, Juncker stated the unifying value of theRome Declaration.
Duringthe ceremony, the release of UK has not been mentioned, probably because, almost certainly it isnot considered an obstacle or a brake on the journey within the Europe integration path.
Another relevant statement was made by thePresident of European Parliament with which he stressed the economic development reached by the internal market. He said: « Europe must be changed, butnot destroyed. Since the European Union is founded, GDP grew compared to theAmerican one, and created millions of jobs». AntonioTrajani reaffirmed also that the way to improveand complete this European enterprise is let the EU the potential untapped free ».
Pope Francis recalled the Christian roots of Europe and noted that "the Union is notonly the one of the parameters, but of the values, of the richness ofdiversity, of the example, of morality and of ideas’’.
Afterseveral years we may say that the method used to make Europe at “small steps" and “successive approximation" hasreached many goals, but not the main one which is the political union of the EUcountries. And maybe has also partially missed to show to the citizens theoriginal vision of solidarity which have inspired the Father Founders (Shuman, De Gasperi e Adenaur).
In fact, there are many positiveexamples achieved by Europe : Euro and the single market have made economic andmonetary stability for businesses and citizens possible, free movement ofgoods, people, services and capital, mini-interest rates, affordable mortgages,low-cost flights and reduced tariffs by End of monopolies.
Europe has secured peace andwell-being for over half a century and for these reasons we must give itconfidence and believe in it.
"Europe is a precious point of reference for all humanity" saidFrancis Pope to the European Parliament.
Indeed, the crisis suffered by the European Union pose a new challenge, especially after the shock of Brexit, also to not disappoint the people who stillbelieve in a multiethnic and multicultural Europe without prejudice and  border to migrants.
Anyway, sixty years after its birth, the EUremains an “indispensable need”, an existential imperative without which itwould be impossible for all the Europeans to defend their civilization, valuesand model of society and development.
For me, as young European citizen, if the EU wasn’t existed and it would not be a greatand precious asset, it should still be invented.

Personally, since I came back Italy after one year spent in Bruxelles, I didn’t imagine I could taken the European Union to my city of origin.
This extraordinary event has happened during these days, thanks to the willing of our friends Associazione Ente Unione, IFALL, ZISPB, PTP Roman to which we gave our support to realize the project "M.E.D.E.U.Y.M.: Making Empowerment Drawing an European Youth Model", funded by the Agenzia Nazionale Giovani under the Erasmus Plus program.
Indeed this experience has been the mirror of the highest level debates at the European institutions with all the annexes advantages and risks.
Youngsters coming form different countries, Italy, Sweden, Romania and Lithuania, with different behaviours, education, social context, but maybe the similar dreams, have been committed to discuss on how to tackle the current obstacles to the european youth future.
I’ve seen with my eyes, finally at a level accessible for all, youngters, at the first experience as policy anlysists, reflecting on current issues, facing them with commitment and originality.
I’ve seen with my eyes also different temperaments, strong personalities, shyness, well balanced persons, exclusion and inclusion, sometimes fear to not be considered equal to the others, closures sometimes, carefreeness, different lifestyles and others quality typical of teens.
I’ve seen youngsters coming from different starting points and views arriving to common solutions: no burocracy, immediate means for youth participation, more integration, support for special needs, promotion of common values, easy going and fast communication. Here is what they want!
Some MEPs, Ignazio Corrao, Caterina Chinnici, Salvo Pogliese and Giovanni La Via came to hear the participants recommendations and so the youths profit (they couldn’t loose this occasion) to ask them to be hosted at the European Parliament in Brussels to held a debate and discuss with  all the competent MEPs for true.
To conclude the days, after the memorable inteviews at the fish market and in the old city centre of Catania the youths leave us their favourite songs and a thought on the EU.
The days showed to all of us what happens when people coming to different countries want to come to unity for the common good, and maybe that we, the Europeans, are not so different as we thought before starting our meeting.
So it might happen that after our next project meeting in Bruxelles (we’ll be engaged to make it possible) some of the participants will travel together around Europe by the free interrail promised by the European Parliament to the new eighteens, being simply friends, but to discover also that the European founding father dreams is still possible.
The youths still believe in it and we still believed in them.
